MRS. Z. I. HARLAN DIED THURSDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Mrs. Z. I.
Harlan age 92, died Thursday morning, August 11, 1960, at 8:35 o'clock in a
local nursing home.
She was born in
Alvardo, September 5, 1867, the daughter of Thad C. and Elizabeth Graves. While
she was very young, the family moved to Mansfield, Texas. She was educated in
the Mansfield Academy, a school whose head master was Dr. John Collier, and
early Texas educator.
It was the
academy that she met Z. I. Harlan and they were married on September 21, 1884.
He was also a graduate of the Mansfield Academy and later a prominent leader as
a Marlin attorney and a member of the local bar, and early political figure in
Falls County.
Mrs. Harlan
came to Marlin as a bride and lived here the rest of her lifetime.
She identified
herself with the work of the Methodist Church, helping to organize various
phases of the women's activities. At her death she was the oldest member of the
Marlin church.
Mrs. Harlan was
interested in the cultural advancement in Marlin and was a member of the early
Shakespeare Club, and in the 1920's a member of the Delphian Society, now the
Sesame Club. She is remembered for her love of flowers and shared many of her
successful plants with her friends.
Mrs. Harlan is
survived by her three daughters, Mrs. A. L. Connor of Longview; Mrs. F. H.
Shaw; and Mrs. T. B. Barlett, Sr., of Marlin; eight grandchildren, 15 great -
grandchildren and nine great - great - grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be held from Adams Funeral Chapel Friday morning, August 12th, at
10 o'clock with Rev. Chad Murray fo the Methodist Church and Rev. H. B.
Streater of the Presbyterian Church officiating.
Pallbearers
will be Thomas Bartlett Jr., Thad Shaw, Paul Windsor, Hammond Norton, Zill
Erskine, and George Harlan.

MRS. HARLAN DIES IN MARLIN THURSDAY

Harlan, 94, whose life was interwoven cultural religious and social circles in
the city of Marlin, Texas died Thursday in a Marlin hospital following a
lengthy illness. Mrs. Harlan was well known in Longview where she visited often
in the of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Connor, 1200Turner Dr.
Funeral services were held Friday morning
at Adams Funeral Chapel, Marlin, with interment in the Marlin Cemetery.
Mrs. Harlan, a lifelong resident of
Marlin, was a member of the Methodist church and was active in many phases of
church work up until the time her health became impaired. She was known as an
authority on the Bible; she was a member of several study clubs in Marlin.
In addition to Mrs. Connor she is survived
by two other daughters, Mrs. F. H. Shaw and Mrs. T. B. Bartlett both of Marlin.
She is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great - grandchildren.
